2nd Rainbow Station opening in China

July 23, 2014

Henrico County-based Rainbow Station will open its second school in China on Saturday.

With classes beginning next week, Rainbow Station’s new school has enrolled six children so far, a spokeswoman for the company said.

The school, which has a maximum enrollment capacity of about 350 children, is housed in a mall in Shunde District, in southern China’s Guangdong Province, she said.

Working with its Chinese partner, the child education and care company opened its first location in China in 2013 in Shenzhen, using a modified version of its preschool classroom and early-learning experiences.

Rainbow Station plans to open at least 100 schools in China in the next five years, Gail Johnson, the company’s founder and CEO, said in a statement.

The Shenzhen and Shunde schools are corporately owned by Paul Pan, CEO of Rainbow Station China.

“I truly want to be able to offer this education system to all Chinese children,” Pan said in a statement. He said he believes in its mission, vision and values and potential for success.

“The Chinese market has a lot of opportunity,” Pan said, “because of the recent economic growth and the expansion in the amount of disposable income the middle class has.”

At the China locations, Rainbow Station is providing smaller class packages, for instance, one-hour science and nature or music and dance enrichment classes. The curriculum also features leadership development from Franklin Covey’s “The Leader in Me” program for children.

Rainbow Station’s school in Shenzhen has more than 250 children enrolled, the company said, and it continues to grow.

Rainbow Station will begin franchising in China next year.

The Rainbow Station in Shunde will have six classrooms, staffed by American and Chinese teachers. The school will have seven full-time American lead teachers when it reaches full capacity, each working with a Chinese assistant teacher.

At its U.S. facilities, the company provides preschool education, after-school recreation, and care for mildly ill children.

Rainbow Station has 10 U.S. locations in three states: Virginia, North Carolina and Texas. The company has a location in Indiana under development.
