Fortune magazine published its 70th annual list of the top 1,000 public and private companies in the U.S. ranked by total revenue. Greater Richmond is now home to eight Fortune 500 and four Fortune 1000 company headquarters, up one from last year.
This year, eight of the 12 Greater Richmond-based companies on the Fortune 1000 list improved their rankings. At No. 84, Performance Food Group jumped seven spots. GRP investors Dominion Energy, Markel Group, Owens & Minor and Genworth Financial all improved their rankings as well. Universal Corporation rejoins the list this year at No. 979.
The region’s average Fortune 500 company increased by 13.5 rankings compared to a two-spot increase nationwide and a nine-spot increase statewide. Greater Richmond’s average Fortune 1000 company ranks about 21 positions higher compared to companies statewide and 28 spots higher than companies nationwide. The region’s strategic advantage can be attributed to Greater Richmond’s strong business climate.
Greater Richmond is home to a third of the 24 Fortune 500 companies based in Virginia. These headquartered companies continue to invest in the region because of its business-friendly environment, robust talent pipeline, strategic location and superior quality of life.
