A 10-story hotel planned for the Locks development just north of the James River would open up a dark section along the Kanawha Canal in downtown Richmond.
A brown metal hulk of a building straddling the Kanawha Canal would be torn down to make way for the Hyatt Place Hotel at The Locks, opening up the Canal Walk on either side of the waterway.
The industrial structure, used decades ago to process aluminum foil at the North Plant site for Reynolds Metals Co., blocks an entire area, covering the canal and providing no clear sense of direction for pedestrians and bicyclists.
The hotel — targeted to open in 2019 — would be built north of the Kanawha Canal, overlooking waterways on the south-facing side and the Downtown Expressway on the other. It would have 144 rooms on the six upper floors and 111 parking spaces in a parking deck and 14 spaces on a surface lot.
