Port Sets Single-Month Record for TEUs;
Calendar Year Volumes are 8.5% Ahead of ‘14
179 Vessels Called Virginia in October
Norfolk –The Port of Virginia® rewrote its record books once again, having handled 233,466 TEUs (twenty-foot equivalent units) in October, making it the single busiest month in the port’s history.
In comparison with last October, TEU volumes are up 5.6 percent; rail units up 9.3 percent; truck volume up 3.9 percent; breakbulk tonnage up 26 percent; and vehicle units up 217 percent. Moreover, October marks the eighth consecutive month of TEU volumes exceeding 210,000 units.
The record TEU volume keeps the port tracking toward its most productive calendar year on record: Year-to-date, the port’s TEU volume is up 8.5 percent, or 167,761 units ahead of where it was at this time in 2014; rail units up 9.1 percent; Virginia Inland Port volume up 2.3 percent; truck volume up 8.7 percent; and vehicle units up 72 percent.
“We have to maintain this level of productivity as we begin to push for further improvements,” said John F. Reinhart, CEO and executive director of the Virginia Port Authority. “We have initiatives under way — the North Gate project at NIT (Norfolk International Terminals) as an example – that when complete will push the needle toward greater productivity and service capability.
“It is equally important to note that our work to secure long-term infrastructure improvements are beginning to take shape. We are executing our plan to be a reliable port partner and build The Port of Virginia as a preferred gateway for trade and economic development. We have implemented a sustainable business model and we are now beginning to capitalize on it.”
Additional October highlights:
- October had the most ship calls in one month since December 2007; both months each had 179 ship calls
- The port handled 4,325 vehicles in October which was the highest October since 1988.
- Total rail containers handled in October were the third highest month ever at 43,062 behind March and July of this year at 44,274 and 43,491 respectively.
- The previous single-month record for TEUs was set in May with 230,511 TEUs handled.
