In collaboration with community partners around the metro-Richmond area, University of Richmond’s School of Professional and Continuing Studies is launching a new beer brewer professional certificate program. The first class will begin in October 2016.
This program is geared toward those interested in entering or advancing in the growing craft beer industry. Students will learn the craft brewing business from the procurement of raw materials through to the proper handling, processing, packaging and distribution of the final product.
University of Richmond is partnering with local breweries, including Hardywood Park Craft Brewery, Strangeways Brewery, Triple Crossing Brewery, The Answer Brewpub, Old Bust Head Brewing Company, Midnight Brewery, Steam Bell Beer Works, Copper Fox Distillery, Lickinghole Creek Farm Brewery and Rusty Beaver Brewery.
“This program is the first of its kind in RVA, and as far as we know, the state,” said Tom Parfitt. “The courses focus on brewing as a profession. It’s not about home brewing – it’s designed for individuals who want to start their own craft beer business or get a job at a brewery.”
The one-year program requires 11 modules, a variety of field experiences and a one-month, 20-hour internship. Instructors will include local brewers and Richmond faculty.
“With this new program, the University of Richmond has helped spotlight the growing needs of our local brewing community,” said Robert William Faithful V, of The Answer Brewpub. “The program speaks not only to the accelerated growth in our brewing community, but in a broader sense, craft brewing is here to stay.”
