Virginia State University and Dominion Energy are testing a new kind of battery that can discharge power for up to 10 hours — more than twice the time that the utility’s current fleet can deliver energy.
The 1.5 megawatt metal-hydrogen battery will be installed as a backup power source at VSU’s Multi-Purpose Center, which hosts athletic events, conferences, concerts and other community events.
It works by using different metal compounds that can store and release electrons, moving the electricity flowing into the battery for storage and then releasing it back to the grid as the battery’s anodes and cathodes generate chemical reactions that turn hydrogen into water and back to hydrogen.
