Haleon (2018-2019)

February 5, 2025

Haleon

Challenge

In 2018, global pharmaceutical companies GlaxoSmithKline (GSK) and Pfizer announced a new joint venture called Haleon to focus on consumer health. Although the companies were considering Pfizer’s existing Richmond facility, locations across the world were competing for this project. In early 2019, GSK and Pfizer contacted the Virginia Economic Development Partnership (VEDP) for assistance. VEDP then reached out to the Greater Richmond Partnership (GRP) to help secure the project.

GRP’s role

GRP completed GSK and Pfizer’s request to provide data on Greater Richmond’s workforce as well as regional talent acquisition, retention and net migration. GRP also shared information on Greater Richmond’s quality of life to help recruit key talent from other markets. In May 2019, VEDP provided GSK and Pfizer executives with a GRP-produced video touting the region’s cultural and recreational assets to assist the company’s relocating professionals. GRP also collected average wages for a range of occupations to support employees’ trailing spouses.

Partners

GRP worked with the Virginia Economic Development Partnership (VEDP) and the City of Richmond Department of Economic Development to secure the project.

Solution

In October 2019, GSK and Pfizer announced they would invest $16.7 million in a research and development facility for the joint venture Haleon in the City of Richmond.
