Challenge

Topsoe, a Danish global leader and manufacturer in carbon emission reduction technologies, required a site for a new manufacturing facility.

Partners

The Greater Richmond Partnership (GRP) partnered with the Virginia Economic Development Partnership (VEDP) and Chesterfield County to secure this project for Greater Richmond.

Competition

Virginia competed against several markets for this project.

Solution

Topsoe announced it selected a site in Chesterfield County’s Meadowville Technology Park in May 2024.

Along with local and state partners, GRP staff hosted site visits and presentations for Topsoe. GRP provided an economic impact study and a labor force profile for the company’s hiring initiatives. GRP also penned a letter of support to the federal government.

Topsoe was granted $6 million from the Commonwealth Opportunity Fund and is eligible to receive benefits from The Port of Virginia Economic and Infrastructure Development Zone Grant Program.

The U.S. is positioning itself as a clean energy leader and with strong support from individual states like Virginia, the country’s clean energy future looks bright. Our collaboration with Virginia is just beginning. In addition to the economic benefits that our facility would bring to the area, we’re investing in STEM education to help the next generation of students prepare for the booming American clean energy economy. Results

  • $400 million planned investment
  • 150 new jobs announced

Next steps

Upon completion of the facility, Topsoe will manufacture advanced, energy-efficient Solid Oxide Electrolyzer Cells (SOEC) which are essential for creating clean hydrogen. Topsoe also plans to launch a “Topsoe STEM Scholarship” to award five Chesterfield County high school seniors with $10,000 one-year scholarships to support future innovators.
